In response to widespread public demand, I hereby enclose my entry in GAMES Magazine's Tale of the Tiles contest.
The rules, succinctly stated: Write a story using the 100 tiles in a Scrabble set -- no more, no less.
Entries were judged on cleverness, originality and humor. My entry is reprinted herewith:

This hard-boiled literary nugget was chosen as one of 10 runners-up from over 1500 entries, nabbing me a Deluxe Turntable Edition Scrabble set, a GAMES T-shirt, and the admiration of logophiles worldwide -- including SF Chronicle columnist
Jon Carroll.
